Dr. Chris Baker
Research Chair - Innovatia
Born in London and educated at the Queen Elizabeth’s School Chris opted early for a career in Life Sciences and completed his PhD in Microbiology at the University of Wales, Cardiff in 1996, progressing to post doctoral research at the University of Toronto. He took on industry positions at Iogen Corporation in Ottawa working on fungal genetics and Ecopia BioSciences Inc. in Montreal where he was Group Leader of In-Silico Discovery.
In 2004, Chris was recruited to manage a Genome Quebec project at Concordia University focused on applying Semantic Technology to fungal genomics. His team won the Semantic Web Challenge (2nd prize) at the International Semantic Web Conference in 2005. Building on considerable experience in Biomedical Informatics and Semantic Technologies he co-edited the book Semantic Web: Revolutionizing Knowledge Discovery in the Life Sciences published by Springer in 2007.
Moving overseas to Asia, Chris headed the Semantic Technology Group at the Data Mining Dept., I2R, (A-STAR) Singapore where his team developed KnowleSuite, which is now licensed from I2R by Knorex Pte Ltd. Chris returned to Canada in 2008 to take up the Innovatia Research Chair at the University of New Brunswick where he is an Associate Professor. He now serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Biomedical Semantics and is an invited expert for the W3C's Semantic Web in Health Care and Life Sciences Interest Group (HCLSIG).
